Abstract
This paper deals with perceptions of minorities in the Canadian context. Specifically, it considers attitudes held in Newfoundland vis-à-vis Canada (with special reference to the federal government) and popular Canadian attitudes toward Newfoundland and its inhabitants. In addition, it examines attitudes of anglophone Newfoundlanders toward Newfoundland's French minority. Within a sociopolitical framework, the paper then focuses on traditional, folkloristic expressions of these attitudes.
