Quest for dual memberships

This study is on dual memberships quests. Specifically, I invited the participants to discuss their experiences during the process of their membership quests from the dominant/Anglophone society, and their membership retainment in their original societies. I employed Maguire's (1987) version of "participatory research" and Strauss and Corbin's (1991) version of "grounded theory" as components of the methodological framework of the study. I applied MacMillan and Schumacher's (1989) version of qualitative research methodology for the data collection. I, then, used Strauss and Corbin's (1991) version of coding systems for data analysis. The participants included six Francophone Canadians and five Aboriginal peoples who were competent in their first languages as well as in English. The findings of the study are: (1) the participants made an effort to quest for membership from the dominant/Anglophone society; (2) the participants also made efforts to maintain their memberships in their original societies; and (3) it seemed difficult, if not impossible, for individuals from the subdominant groups to "gain" membership from the dominant society and to maintain their membership in their original societies at the same time.
