Abstract
This article presents a discussion of teachers' work in Ontario francophone schools. There are three aspects to teachers' tasks: to transmit knowledge, to socialize students to societal values, and, in francophone schools in minority contexts which are increasingly complex, to assure the safeguard of the language and culture. This complexity is attributable in a large measure to the multiple challenges which schools face in this environment. In a context that is menaced by assimilation by the Anglophone majority, teachers become agents of linguistic and cultural “reproduction”.
