Abstract
Based on the example of chiac, this article proposes a critical analysis of the academic operations of definition and categorization. Following the scholarly literature devoted to the subject over the past 25 years, I describe the categorizations and re‑categorizations to which chiac has been subjected. I seek to illustrate the changeable nature of definitions and the constructed character of linguistic classifications. I also analyze a general linguistics book aimed at a popular audience to similarly observe processes of definition and classification at work. This article argues that the linguistic non‑autonomy of chiac and the (massive) use of elements borrowed from another language and used by a large number of people, should not be interpreted simplistically as the sign of ongoing assimilation of the entire community.
